How to Find a Handyman

Finding a handyman

Use Plentific to compare the best prices for a local handyman. A handyman can be a jack of all trades, meaning that one person could take care of a list of various jobs you need doing and you only pay for their hire. Plentific’s directory is filled with recommended local handymen who can undertake a whole range of tasks in one visit.

Handymen are a cheap and effective way of handling your to-do list. You may be considering carrying out some DIY, but a handyman will be qualified and experienced in areas that you may not be. Remember, you are paying for their expertise as well as their time - they’ll be able to spot solutions through experience.

What do you need to think about when finding a handyman?

Consider how many tasks are going to be on your list. Think about anything that needs fixing where the task isn’t within your own remit. Then make sure you write the list in a way that specifically details what you need doing, prior to engaging with any handymen. It’s very important that you’re clear about the scale of work you’re looking for and number of tasks - it’s not helpful to wait until your local handyman arrives to reveal extra work that you need doing.

Make sure your handyman is licensed and insured. You can check this by asking for proof of their paperwork during the quoting process. As handyman is a generic title and there are no obvious barriers to entry, it’s essential that you verify the local professionals that you choose to hire.

Depending on their line of work, the handyman should be registered to bodies like NICEIC which authorises electrical work of its members. Any offers to carry out heating work should be backed by a membership with the Gas Safe Register.

An experienced professional should be able to provide all of this information. If they cannot, or are hesitant to do so, it would be wise to continue your search.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman can work across a variety of specialisms, these can include trade skills such as electrical, carpentry, masonry or plumbing work. They could carry out maintenance or repair work, across the interior and exterior of your property. Their repair work could range from a window, to pipes, doors, tiles and floorboards.

Your local handyman could also carry out cleaning of drains, re-painting walls or surfaces and they could also polish floors.

How much does a handyman cost?

Plentific advises you get at least three quotes from as many handymen in order to assess what the competitive rate is. Handymen will charge an hourly rate, which will be stipulated by the nature of the task. If the task requires trade skills, then it will cost more than the changing of lightbulbs. A tradesmen with qualifications across the board will cost more than one without a license, so it may not pay to get the cheapest tradesman.

I have a few different jobs I need doing ASAP. 1. I need an old gas fireplace removed and the gas line capped. 2. I need a new electric fireplace (I have it new in the box) installed in the spot where the gas fireplace was. This will require a long drill (50cm) to run the wires. EPS successfully tiled the bathroom and it was also fitted with a modern ensuite. Plumbing entailed fitting a powerful pump and modern power shower as well as chrome fittings. The quality of the work & the speed it was completed at was very impressive. Although I was traveling overseas at the time, Nadeem managed to communicate & project manage this upgrade on a timely basis. Through the use of instant messaging I was given regular photo updates as well as being able to provide input as the work was being done. I cannot recommend Nadeem and his team highly enough. I look forward to working with him again as I upgrade the rest of my home!

Metin was not only hugely professional, brilliant at the job in hand but he also went the extra mile by popping out to B&Q (twice!) when we realised our TV bracket was not the correct one. He was fantastic. I have dealt with a lot of builders and handymen recently and Metin was the best of the best. Will definitely be using again.

Great work from Metin on fixing a few things around the house, including installing TV bracket and shoe cabinets, trimming and sanding down door frames and installing new door frame floor separators. Metin was very professional and attentive to details, he advised on best course of action and left the areas cleaned after the work. Would definitely recommend him.
