How to Find a Handyman

Finding a handyman

A handyman can be a jack of all trades; a tradesman that can handle everyday household tasks and DIY, such as putting up shelves, changing plugs or assembling furniture. Plentific’s directory is filled with recommended local handymen who can undertake a whole range of tasks in one visit.

Handymen are a cheap and effective way of handling your to-do list. You may be considering carrying out some DIY, but a handyman will be qualified and experienced in areas that you may not be. Remember, you are paying for their expertise as well as their time - they’ll be able to spot solutions through experience.

What do you need to think about when finding a handyman?

Consider how many tasks are going to be on your list. Think about anything that needs fixing where the task isn’t within your own remit. Then make sure you write the list in a way that specifically details what you need doing, prior to engaging with any handymen. It’s very important that you’re clear about the scale of work you’re looking for and number of tasks - it’s not helpful to wait until your local handyman arrives to reveal extra work that you need doing.

Make sure your handyman is licensed and insured. You can check this by asking for proof of their paperwork during the quoting process. As handyman is a generic title and there are no obvious barriers to entry, it’s essential that you verify the local professionals that you choose to hire.

Depending on their line of work, the handyman should be registered to bodies like NICEIC which authorises electrical work of its members. Any offers to carry out heating work should be backed by a membership with the Gas Safe Register.

An experienced professional should be able to provide all of this information. If they cannot, or are hesitant to do so, it would be wise to continue your search.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman can work across a variety of specialisms, these can include trade skills such as electrical, carpentry, masonry or plumbing work. They could carry out maintenance or repair work, across the interior and exterior of your property. Their repair work could range from a window, to pipes, doors, tiles and floorboards.

Your local handyman could also carry out cleaning of drains, re-painting walls or surfaces and they could also polish floors.

How much does a handyman cost?

Plentific advises you get at least three quotes from as many handymen in order to assess what the competitive rate is. Handymen will charge an hourly rate, which will be stipulated by the nature of the task. If the task requires trade skills, then it will cost more than the changing of lightbulbs. A tradesmen with qualifications across the board will cost more than one without a license, so it may not pay to get the cheapest tradesman.

What is outstanding about the men that work for LD Property Services is the personal qualities they bring, they are polite, kind, thoughtful and so hard working. They take pride in their work and will stay later to finish something off or prepare for the next day, they've also worked a couple of Saturdays.

I hired EPS based on the glowing recommendations of a colleague at work. My garden was overgrown and infested with ivy which was climbing up onto the neighbouring flats. I needed someone to go in quickly and resolve the issue. EPS were very efficient & sourced a local gardener whom they supervised and promptly made my garden look neat & tidy. Everything was cleared away and they provided a very competitive price. Would definitely recommend EPS.

I hired Lucas and his team to fully refurbish a 2 bed flat that included fitting new windows, bathroom, kitchen with decoration throughout. Lucas gave a good first impression, he turned up when he said he would, provided some ideas and provided a competitive estimate. I have not been at all disappointed with the work he completed, he and his team were very reliable. They were flexible and under took other jobs on an adjoining flat that I owned. After selling this flat, a couple of things showed up on the survey (not related to the initial work) and Lucas was happy to complete these smaller jobs as well. I would definitely recommend Lucas to others and will use him again when the opportunity arises.

Fantastic service, Lucas and Darota are an amazing professional team always reliable and our kitchen extension is to an exceptional standard. Darota offers an amazing interior design service. The builders have been punctual, worked really hard and when we have come home from work the house is always tidy so we don't even feel the house is being renovated. We offered LD Property services more work after our kitchen extension/complete refurbishment to include a complete renovation of all our home including garden and driveway. The project has been managed brilliantly as we work full time this has been really helpful.
