What do you need to know about hiring a pest controller?

When you hire a pest controller you will most likely want your job done quickly and professionally. Even so, try to know as much as you can about the task at hand and allow your candidates to inspect your property before hiring anyone. They should be able to identify your pests, how they are getting in and what action you need to take. Certain pests may require specialist action, so be sure to check your candidate’s experience with jobs of the same nature as yours.

Pest control can be a dangerous job, so you need to have confidence in your choice. Look over reviews from their previous jobs and ask them to walk you through exactly what they will be doing. Membership in groups such as the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) or the BASIS PROMPT pest control register is a good sign of a specialist’s skill and professionalism. These groups typically have strict entry standards and will expect members to deliver top quality work on every job.

You cannot afford to ignore issues of safety when it comes to pest control. Your choice will need to have sufficient access to the job, and should be well versed in safety procedures with their own equipment. Make sure that your choice has an up to date public liability insurance policy as well as a guarantee/ warranty. If it is a larger project you may want to discuss your safety as well as that of your neighbours. Your choice should be able to provide proof that they are qualified to handle and store certain pesticides and dispose of deceased or captured animals.

An experienced professional should be able to provide all of this information. If they cannot, or if they are hesitant to do so, it may be wise to continue your search.

What does a pest controller do?

A pest controller is the Pro to call when you need pests removed from your property. Most controllers will be able to handle a wide variety of pests, including various insects and rodents, though more dangerous pests may require a niche specialist.

The role of a pest controller can be summed up in three words: prevention, examination and treatment. Preventative measures, such as anti-perching systems or electronic fly controls, will stop pests from establishing themselves in your property. By examining your property, a pest controller can identify your pests, how they are getting into your home and how well established they are. Through proper treatment, a pest controller can completely remove the pests from your property and prevent them from returning. The kind of methods that they might employ could include fumigations, traps or chemical treatments. Thankfully, a pest controller will usually supply all of their own equipment.

How much does it cost to hire a pest controller?

The cost to hire a pest controller depends on the type of service that you need. The price will depend on the number of visits required, as well as the type and number of treatments. The type of pest is another important factor, as certain pests will simply be easier to remove. The size of your property will also influence the price. If you need an emergency service, then you can expect the costs to increase, especially if you need help outside of standard working hours.

Always discuss costs with your candidates before signing a contract and try to collect quotes from at least three potential hires. You should also be sure to ask for a price breakdown when given a quote: this will help you spot any work that you can do yourself to save money, as well as any unnecessary fees driving your costs up.
You should remember, in the event that your candidate needs to bring in more specialists or materials, to check with them and see if this will incur additional costs. Do not let them approve or organise anything that will add to your bill without first consulting you!

Three Shires Property Services provided a quote quickly for a job many other companies didn't even reply to. Joe was superb at providing options and matching exactly the parquet flooring already in place. John ( Three Shires ) who carried out the work was a hard worker, polite, tidy and prompt and the resulting parquet floor infill was perfect.

Three Shires - great work The carpenter was exceptional and the plumber was too. I had a new kitchen fitted which looks and is marvellous. I also had a bathroom fitted, which looks and is superb! The work was excellent, the communication was straightforward and clear. The work took a little longer than estimated but a few things were added to make the finished job just right. They started on time and never left me with a mess to clear up. Thank you John for your great carpentry skills and Joe for your plumbing, co-ordination and design skills.
