Our latest research shows that, on average, almost a quarter of homeowners are planning to spend more this year on home improvements in at least one area of the home. This emphasises that there will be a continual growth in the popularity and reliance of home improvements throughout this year.

Our statistics illustrate the growing shift in demand for home improvements across the UK

Looking at individual areas, flooring is set to experience the biggest increase in investment, with an average of 29% looking to spend more on this in 2017. It seems that carpet fitters as well as tile and wood floor specialists are going to be high in demand this year to say the least! Analysing this result by location:

  • Sheffield showed the highest number of homeowners looking to spend more on improving this area with 45%
  • London (36%) and Brighton (36%) homeowners were close behind, followed by Birmingham (35%).

After flooring, our results showed a planned increase of spending on the kitchen, bathroom and interior decor, which were the runners-up with 27%. Increased spending on the living room and bedroom then ranked third, both with 25% aiming to invest more in these rooms.

They are followed by the garden, which 20% of homeowners plan to spend more on this year, when compared to 2016. However, homeowners were less concerned about spending more on updating their conservatory (18%), appliances (17%) and lighting (17%).

Looking at the capital, 38% of London homeowners are planning to spend more on their bathrooms this year. This is followed by flooring, which 37% are looking to invest more into, and updating the living room takes a close third with 36%.

On average, almost a third of Londoners are set to spend more money on at least one area of their home in 2017. A number of Londoners are willing to invest more heavily when compared to the national average, which emphasises the popularity of home improvements in the capital.

Spokesperson for Plentific, Stephen Jury, said: “Our statistics illustrate the growing shift in demand for home improvements across the UK. Nearly a quarter of homeowners are upping their budget this year for at least one area of their property with flooring leading the way.

We’re also seeing this demand first-hand as we had a record month of jobs posted on Plentific during January; a particularly large number of them being flooring jobs, especially in the Greater London area. One thing’s for sure, tradesmen are going to be busy in 2017, especially those that are Plentific Pros!”

If you're looking to update any of these areas, whether you need to find a local kitchen specialist, interior designer or appliance installer, Plentific can find your ideal Pro for you!
