In this modern day and age, the chance to own a private castle doesn’t come along every day!
However, if you have deep pockets and a love of history, you now have your chance to own Ireland’s only private medieval castle (with ensuite facilities), complete with tall oak door, spiral staircase and a history of oppressing the local peasants.
The castle sits in the beautifully picturesque countryside of Kilmaine, County Mayo. The sheer intimidating presence of the castle would be enough to grab any history buff’s interest, but the stone giant also carries a hefty price tag of £1,321,350.
Currently, the castle is being operated as a “successful business”. Guests can enjoy “13 acres of rich walled pasture land”, which features “a meadow garden with ornamental pond and fruit trees”. The character of the castle has thankfully been retained, with the original features having been “very well restored”.
Period decor can be found throughout the property, which is set over five floors. Ornate carved doors and medieval art feature in each of the five ensuite bedrooms, as well as the echoing medieval style dining hall.
The castle’s stone walls may look chilling, but staying warm won't be a problem! Each bedroom contains its own electric storage heater, while both of the generously sized reception rooms offer their own large wood burning fireplace.
‘The entire perimeter is planted with mature trees: Ash, elm, birch, oak and pine which is an excellent source of firewood,” reads the website for Period Property UK, where the castle is currently advertised.
