The painting job was urgent. It was quickly organised and the boys worked long hours and in good spirit to get it done. A big thank you!

Although I had to wait a while for the plumber to arrive it was well worth the wait. Plumber
was very thorough and removed quite a bit of debris from the drain that had built up over a long period of time in the drain away pipe. The plumber was very informative and friendly and completed the job within half an hour. (Note: I had a blockage a month ago and although the drain was running free after a plunging by a different plumbing firm, I feel that if the debris had been cleared then it might not have happened again and would not have cost me so much!) I would thoroughly recommend JMLPlumpingServices every time.

Hiring a tradesman to remove wallpaper

Removing wallpaper is a long and tedious job. It is much more than just ripping down paper; you will need to remove the paper, backing and paste without damaging the wall, and then sand it smooth to make it suitable for new decorations.

The Plentific website can quickly generate a bespoke list of tradesmen in your local area that offer the skills you need, and ach will have a profile displaying their qualifications, past projects and customer reviews. By choosing a ‘verified’ Pro you will also gain the Plentific Guarantee, which can cover your project from beginning to end. Whatever your job may be, Plentific can help you find your ideal hire.

What do I need to know about wallpaper removal?

Removing wallpaper is more complicated than it looks, and if you don’t know what you are doing you could seriously damage your walls. It is also a long job, usually taking at least a day and a half as a DIY job. For a swiftly and professionally completed job, it is best to hire a professional painter/ decorator or handyman for the work. They will also have the necessary chemical strippers and tools on hand for the job, or even a steamer.

Prep work is important when it comes to wallpaper removal. You can save money on your quote by doing this yourself. Remove furniture from the room and cover up the floor and any woodwork, as lots of glue and water will be flying. You will also need to remove any vents, as well as any outlet or switch covers. The actual process will involve removing the wallpaper, followed by the backing and then the paste beneath. The wall will then need to be sanded down to make it smooth enough for new decorations. While this may not sound like much, it is an extremely messy and tedious job, and any mistakes could really show through your new decorations.

It is important to check the backgrounds of your potential hires, and to get quotes from multiple sources to compare. Usually a painter/ decorator or handyman will have learned on the job or will have passed an apprenticeship qualification. Ask about this, and whether they have customer feedback that they can show to you. Feedback is important when hiring tradesmen, and if a candidate is reluctant to show you any then they are one to avoid. A good sign of quality is if they belong to a national tradesmans’ association, such as the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA); these groups have high entry standards for quality and professionally that members have to constantly meet. You should always make sure that your hire has active public liability insurance and a guarantee for their work.

On average, you could expect to pay around £350 for two tradesmen to remove your wallpaper and repaint the room. Although a handyman can usually do the job, an established painter/ decorator may have the equipment to do it much quicker, such as a steamer. Collect several quotes and always ask for a price breakdown: you will likely be able to save money by prepping the room and removing any waste yourself.
